After-school Programs

As part of our Community Learning Programs, BSAI offers a wide array of after-school and summer programming to the Big Sur community with JazzMasters and Stage Kids as core elements of the program.

Classes are provided for Captain Cooper School, Pacific Valley School and the local Charter and Home School.

To support these classes, BSAI calls upon its diverse pool of local artists and artisans. Here are the programs currently active at the Captain Cooper School:

JazzMasters
Thursdays, Now thru June 6

Ribbon Dancing!
All Big Sur kids are invited to participate in our next after-school arts program series where they will:

• Learn and practice beginner’s poi
• Increase flexibility and coordination
• Practice an ancient dance form

In this six week program your kids will be invited to learn and practice beginners poi spinning techniques. Poi was originally used by the indigenous Maori people of Polynesia to increase their flexibility, strength in their hands and arms as well as improving coordination. Poi was also used as a form of entertainment and as a game by the Maori women in New Zealand. To watch a Maori dancer perform with the Poi is to be mesmerized by their skill and dexterity. Don't miss this experience with professional firedancer and poi artist Erica Buffett.

All materials for the class will be provided.
