Our Vision
Big Sur Arts Intiative seeks to preserve, support, and enhance the cultural life of the Big Sur community and is dedicated to providing children and youth of the Big Sur community with access to arts, education, and cultural opportunities.
BSAI will work toward these goals to instill a greater appreciation for the arts in the community at large, establishing a permanent home for the arts while fostering opportunities for artists and artisans. We seek to forge alliances within the nonprofit and community service sector while building bridges with the arts and cultural communities beyond Big Sur’s borders.
About Us
The Big Sur Arts Initiative (BSAI) coordinates arts and enrichment programs for the children, youth and families of Big Sur. The organization began as an emergency response to the 3-month closure of Highway One and disruption to local schools caused by the 1997/ 1998 winter of El Nino. Now in our 10th year and with the support of our wonderful funding partners, the BSAI is stronger and has greater impact than ever before with a staff of five and expanded programming and outreach endeavors.
In 2008, we are kicking off the year with a logo contest open to all Big Sur residents. Also this year you can look for more Latino outreach programming, a new Artist Showcase Series through the ArtsBridge program, and a revitalized Artist-in-Residence program collaboration with the Big Sur Land Trust, just to name a few upcoming initiatives.
We are ever-widening our circle of alliances and friends, by collaborating with respected partners such as the Monterey Bay Plein Air Painter’s Association, the Big Sur Health Center, the Henry Miller Library, the Spirit Garden at Loma Vista, the Monterey Museum of Art, and of course the area schools and art galleries.
